Merry Christmas!

We defiantley did not have a "white" Christmas here in Riverside, but we did have a fire in the fireplace (okay so it is a gas fireplace--no wood needed).
I made lots of treats for Christmas. I teach Gospel Doctrine in my singles ward and made white chocolate covered popcorn for the class. Here is Grant helping me. The funniest part was watching my nephews and niece watch a popcorn popper. I have an air popper and they had never seen it before. I also made cookies, brownies etc for our traditional family Christmas plates that we give out to other families.

Here are my nephews and niece that live nearby. They came over for presents and dinner. Cambrie was very excited about her new purse that she got from her Dad. Very cute!

Catholic Church on Prop 8

SACRAMENTO 7 November 2008 (This news release was issued by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento) The following statement was released today by Bishop William Weigand, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento and former Bishop of Salt Lake City, in response to attacks on (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) for supporting California’s Proposition 8, defending the traditional definition of marriage:

“Catholics stand in solidarity with our Mormon brothers and sisters in support of traditional marriage — the union of one man and one woman — that has been the major building block of Western Civilization for millennia.

“The ProtectMarriage coalition, which led the successful campaign to pass Proposition 8, was an historic alliance of people from every faith and ethnicity. LDS were included — but so were Catholics and Jews, Evangelicals and Orthodox, African-Americans and Latinos, Asians and Anglos.

“Bigoted attacks on Mormons for the part they played in our coalition are shameful and ignore the reality that Mormon voters were only a small part of the groundswell that supported Proposition 8.

“As the former bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, I can attest to the fact that followers of the Mormon faith are a good and generous people with a long history of commitment to family and giving to community causes.

“I personally decry the bigotry recently exhibited towards the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — coming from the opponents of Proposition 8, who ironically, have called those of us supporting traditional marriage intolerant.

“I call upon the supporters of same-sex marriage to live by their own words — and to refrain from discrimination against religion and to exercise tolerance for those who differ from them. I call upon them to accept the will of the people of California in the passage of Proposition 8.”

Catching Up

Since I haven't had much time to blog lately, I wanted to catch up on the last few months with "5 Best Things". Here it goes (in no particular order):

1. I now have my multiple subject credential. This took forever and I am glad that I am done going to school...for a little while...at least until I go back for my Masters.

2. We are finally having fall weather! (It is still in the 80's...but at least the low 80's!!)

3. My car broke down...I had to get it towed...but the good news is that I only had to get a sensor replaced and it was only $130 to fix!!

4. Attended a regional conference with other single adults in socal and had a great time learning from amazing speakers...especially Elder Reynolds.

5. Being involved with Proposition 8 has been an amazing experience. First, to stand up for what I believe in against strong opposition. Second, to work with others who have the same desire to support traditional marriage. I have become friends with many through volunteering on Yes on Prop 8. Third, seeing the examples of my family throughout this election. Watching my parents, siblings, and nephews do all that they can to protect marriage. I know that we have been blessed to have passed Prop 8, but the opposition is still fighting to overturn the people's decision.

Why Prop 8 needs to pass!

First Graders Taken To San Francisco City Hall For Gay Wedding

SAN FRANCISCO, October 11 – In the same week that the No on 8 campaign launched an ad that labeled as “lies” claims that same-sex marriage would be taught in schools to young children, a first grade class took a school-sponsored trip to a gay wedding. Eighteen first graders traveled to San Francisco City Hall Friday for the wedding of their teacher and her lesbian partner, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. The school sponsored the trip for the students, ages 5 and 6, taking them away from their studies for the same-sex wedding. According to the Yes on 8 campaign, the public school field trip demonstrates that the California Supreme Court's decision to legal same-sex marriage has real consequences.

"Taking children out of school for a same-sex wedding is not customary education. This is promoting same-sex marriage and indoctrinating young kids," said Yes on 8—ProtectMarriage. com Campaign Co-Manager Frank Schubert. "I doubt the school has ever taken kids on a field trip to a traditional wedding," Schubert said.

When asked by the Yes on 8 campaign, The San Francisco Chronicle reporter said she did not know if the school had ever sponsored a field trip for students to a traditional wedding. Telling the Chronicle that the field trip was "a teachable moment," the school's principal believes it is perfectly appropriate for first graders to attend a same-sex wedding. Officials in other school districts disagree.

"Prop. 8 protects our children from being taught in public schools that 'same-sex marriage' is the same as traditional marriage," said Santa Ana Unified School District board member Rosemarie "Rosie" Avila. "We should not accept a court decision that results in public schools teaching our kids that gay marriage is okay. That is an issue for parents to discuss with their children according to their own values and beliefs. It shouldn't be forced on us against our will," Avila added.

The lesbian teacher's wedding was officiated by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Newsom is featured in a Yes on 8 television ad, released last week, in which he arrogantly declares of same-sex marriage: "The door's wide open now. It's gonna happen, whether you like it or not."The Yes on 8 campaign's ads explain that if the voters do not overturn the California Supreme Court's same-sex marriage ruling, teachers will be required to teach young children that there is no difference between gay marriage and traditional marriage.“It's totally unreasonable that a first grade field trip would be to a same-sex wedding," said Chip White, Press Secretary for Yes on 8. "This is overt indoctrination of children who are too young to understand it.” The field trip underscores the Yes on 8 campaign’s message that unless Prop. 8 passes, children will be taught about same-sex marriage in public schools. “Not only can it happen, it has already happened,” White said.

Tuesdays

I have decided to take a break from Janet Evanovich's "Stephanie Plum" series and started reading "Tuesdays with Morrie". I have watched the movie a few times and always enjoyed and decided to read the book. It is very inspiring and I definitely recommend it!

Autumn

So I decided to change my background since it is now "fall". Today it was 104--and I have no idea when it is supposed to cool down. I don't know if I will ever get used to having no seasons here in CA. Times like these I really miss Pennsylvania! Today's high there was 62! Wow that would be nice!!

Image Tag

I saw this on Jill's blog (a missionary from my mission).
Basically, you search for the answers to a few questions using the Google/Yahoo Image search. Then, you have to post an image from the first page of the results with your answer.
My age
Where I live: Riverside

Place I would like to travel:

Well, I really don't desire to travel the world, but I love lighthouses and I think Maine would be beautiful to go and see.

My favorite food: Chocolate
Where I grew up:

I was born in Salt Lake City, but I only lived there until I was four, so I don't consider it home. I have lived in so many places, but I lived in Clarks Summit, PA from second grade until ninth grade. I miss seeing trees change colors. The fall is so beautiful there!

My favorite color: Purple!!

My favorite animal:

Well, I am not a fan of animals (sorry!) but if I ever decided to get a dog I think the Jack Russell terriers are cute.

Something I used to love:
I picked this because I loved reading "The Babysitter's Club" growing up! Every so often I see one of these books in a fifth or sixth grade classroom.
My first name: Sheri
This is a picture of a Sheri Ann Rose--who knew?

My middle name: Lynn

Although I was not named after her! :-)

My last name: Pendleton
This is a soilder's scrapbook page from Camp Pendleton.

I tag my awesome sister-in-laws Amber and Cindy! :-)

Subsitute Teaching

Since school has started and I am waiting for my credential from Chapman University, I have been subbing. Yesterday I subbed kindergarten and today I was at a middle school teaching 7th grade English. Very different assignments! I loved subbing today at the middle school! I would much rather have students with attitudes than students who whine all day long! Granted, the kindergartners are still getting used to being at school (and it is full day), but there isn't enough money in the world to pay me to be a kindergarten teacher!!!

READING

I am not much of a reader, but a friend bought me the book "One for the Money" and I really enjoyed it. Janet Evanovich is the author and has written the Stephanie Plum novel series. Stephanie looses her job and becomes a bounty hunter. Maybe I like them so much because of all the "Law and Order" I watch! :-) There are fourteen books in this series. I finished the second one last night, "Two for the Dough" and plan on reading the third one "Three to get Deadly" this weekend.

Earthquake

We had a 5.8 magnitude earthquake today. It happened about 11:40 am, so I was at work. Earthquakes at work are more dramatic than at any other place, because my co worker FREAKS out. It is pretty entertaining. We work on the second floor and it shook the building quite a bit. Luckily there hasn't been any injuries reported.
